Harmonica sessions

Our harmonica sessions offer something a little different — and completely optional. They give people a chance to connect through music rather than words

Music & Harmonica

For many people with aphasia, music feels freeing, expressive, and joyful.

These sessions take the pressure off speaking and focus on doing something fun and meaningful together.

Why Harmonica?

Music brings people together: Everyone can join in, even with significant communication difficulties.

It supports speech: Playing the harmonica helps with breath control, rhythm, and pitch. All of these things are important for speaking.

Learning something new: Members enjoy building a new skill and seeing their progress.

Shared purpose: Working toward a common musical goal creates a strong sense of teamwork.

Positive and uplifting: Sessions are relaxed, encouraging, and full of smiles.

Friendship and support: As with all our activities, the focus is on inclusion and shared enjoyment.

The sessions are led by Chris Startup from Project Sounds (https://www.projectsounds.co.uk/project-harmonica)

He is a professional musician and teacher with experience using music - including harmonica and singing - to support lung health and well-being.

Chris has been working with our group since 2023, bringing warmth, humour, and a deep understanding of how music can empower people with aphasia.
