Communication Sessions
Aphasia can make everyday communication feel harder - but it doesn’t have to stop people connecting, laughing, learning, or feeling part of something
What we offer
At the Aphasia Café, we create friendly, relaxed opportunities for people with aphasia to communicate in whatever way works for them.
From weekly conversation sessions and harmonica workshops to partner meetups and community outings, everything we do is designed to build confidence, share experiences, and help people feel part of a supportive community.
Partners and family members are welcome too.
We do not run formal sessions for them, but over time they have formed their own supportive group.
Some come every week and use a separate room during sessions. Other partners dip in and out.
It is completely flexible.
Communication Sessions
Our original conversation group has been running since 2019.
It offers a warm, welcoming space for people with aphasia to connect, communicate, and support one another.
Sessions are led by volunteer Speech Therapists.
They provide gentle structure while keeping things flexible, so everyone can take part in any way that suits them — speaking, writing, drawing, gesturing, or using technology.
The focus is always on confidence, friendship, and encouragement.
What to Expect
Weekly sessions: We meet every week, alternating between face‑to‑face and online.
Led by SLTs: Qualified speech and language therapists guide the sessions and support participation.
All communication welcome: Speech, gesture, writing, drawing, photos, apps — everything counts.
Supportive atmosphere: No pressure, no judgement. People take their time, and the group supports each other.
Small groups: Usually 8–10 people, so everyone has space to join in.
Online sessions (Zoom): Held every other week and free of charge. We help anyone who’s new to Zoom so they can join confidently.
Face‑to‑face sessions: Held at the Old Woburn Sands Fire Station (MK17 8SG). We split into two rooms — one for PwA, one for partners — for relaxed peer‑to‑peer conversation. We have a break and rejoin together for coffee.
Flexible format: Sometimes we stay as one group; sometimes we split into smaller groups for specific activities.
Encouraging online participation: Not everyone joins Zoom, but we gently encourage it as a great way to stay connected between in‑person meetings.
